The Honorary Consulate of Iceland was established at the Lappset premises in Rovaniemi on 10 October 2018 by Iceland’s Minister for the Environment Guðmundur Ingi Guðbrandsson and Iceland's Ambassador to Finland Árni Þór Sigurðssoni. Managing Director of the Lappset Group Tero Ylinenpää also acts as Honorary Consul for Iceland.
The task of the consul is to promote trade and cultural relations between nations, as well as providing assistance for Icelanders living in or visiting Rovaniemi and Lapland, if consulate assistance is required.
Honorary consuls are an important part of Lappset’s societal activities and are positions of trust and honour for persons employed by the company. The promotion and development of relations, particularly between the Nordic nations and Finland form a vital part of the company’s sense of responsibility.
The grand opening ceremony for the Honorary Consulate of Iceland was attended by Mayor of the City of Rovaniemi Esko Lotvonen, Permanent Secretary Hannele Pokka, a number of other consuls operating in Rovaniemi, and Icelanders visiting the city.
This marks the third opening of an honorary consulate at Lappset. Chairperson of the Board of Directors Johanna Ikäheimo has long held the post of Honorary Consul for Sweden, and the Director of the theme park division at Lappset Creative Johan Granholm is the Honorary Consul for Denmark.
