Erikslund Shopping Center – A playful oasis for the whole family
At Erikslund Shopping Center in Västerås, a new and inspiring meeting place has emerged. Here, play, movement and imagination come together in a park that gives families with children a break from shopping and turns the visit into an experience for the whole family. The project was initiated by Ingka Centres with the aim of strengthening Erikslund as a destination while also providing children with a safe, playful and welcoming environment.
Creating more than a playground
The ambition was to create a place that not only complements the shopping centre, but also adds clear value. The playground was designed to serve as a natural meeting point for families, be visually appealing, and maintain a high level of quality in both design and functionality.
The challenge was to create a cohesive concept where the play equipment, the identity of the site, and the surrounding environment work together.
A site-specific concept shaped through collaboration
WSP was commissioned to bring the vision to life and developed the park’s overall concept, design and visual language. The work began in collaboration with Bolder Development Oy, but it was through the continued partnership between WSP and Ingka Centres that the park’s distinct identity truly took shape.
WSP’s landscape architect developed the drawings and concept in close dialogue with Josefin Hallencreuz at Ingka, based on Ingka’s vision for the site.
Tailored play based on the Flora concept
The play equipment is based on Lappset’s Flora product range, which has been adapted, refined and optimised for Erikslund. Some modules are entirely site-specific, while others are based on standard products that have been adjusted in height, scale and detailing to harmonise with WSP’s design concept.
The result is a playground where every element feels carefully considered and tailored to its context.
When the place comes to life
To enhance the park’s playful expression, Lappset Fantasia Works contributed site-specific elements. Visitors are welcomed by Erikslund’s own mascot, Billie the bee, together with small bees, flowers and butterflies that give the park a warm, imaginative and inviting character.
The themed details create recognition, joy and a strong identity for the place.
A natural meeting place for families
Today, the playground at Erikslund Shopping Center has become a natural gathering place for families with children. Here, children’s curiosity and joy of movement are given space, while the shopping visit is transformed into a more playful and memorable experience.
The park demonstrates how thoughtful design, collaboration and site-specific solutions can create environments that both engage and enrich.
