About the project

LEGOLAND Deutschland Resort opened the 2018 season on 24 March with the introduction of four exciting new attractions, among them the large Pirate Island Hotel with a huge Pirate Ship in the LEGOLAND Holiday Village by Lappset Creative.

Three other attractions include The Great LEGO Race, Europe's first LEGO themed virtual reality roller coaster, the popular LEGO Star Wars™ MINILAND Model Display, extended with key scenes from the seventh film in the sci-fi saga and the LEGO NINJAGO heroes embarked on a new 4D movie adventure.

Pirate Island Hotel

Ships to sleep in, buccaneer menus, a pirate ship playground – on 24 March, the €26.6 million Pirate Island Hotel opened its doors in the LEGOLAND Holiday Village, right by the park. The entire area is modelled like a pirate island.

The centrepiece of this children's paradise is the impressive pirate ship in the front of the Pirate Island Hotel. The large wooden construction provides budding buccaneers all the room they need to sail the LEGO seas.

The design process went smoothly and the outcome was a good balance between functionality, play value, capacity and theming. The overall design fits excellently with the IP owners, Legoland’s requirements and the budget. Our technical design and manufacturing took about 12 weeks and the installation 3 weeks. The hand over was on the 2nd of February 2018. Legoland’s team did a great work and provided marvellous LEGO Pirates props/characters, which are now attached to the Pirate Ship’s bow.

Asko Alanen, Concept Manager at Lappset Creative

Sustainable wooden construction

The main material used in the ship is pressure-treated and painted timber, Nordic PEFC certified pine, which has grown slowly in Finnish Lapland. Therefore, it is very strong and long lasting natural, ecological and sustainable material. The 11-metre high masts are made of powder coated steel with printed fabric sails.

We selected and used the best materials for each use considering functionality, durability, visual design and safety.

Tero Puotiniemi, Senior Concept Designer

The Pirate Ship is 18.5 metres long, 16.5 metres wide and the mast height is 11.5 metres. The size of its sails is 40 square metres. The entire vessel weights about 10 tons.

The Skull Island is 8.3 metres long, 6.8 metres wide and 3.3 metres high.
