People aged 65 or over represent a larger and larger proportion of the population in industrialised countries and 37 percent of people aged 75 or over live alone. The need for exercise and social interaction does not go away as we get older. On the contrary, in order to maintain a good quality of life for longer it is imperative that we keep challenging our minds and bodies and stay involved. No matter what age we are, the most enjoyable and least arduous form of exercise is play — ideally with other people.
Staying physically active is very important. The natural deterioration of motor skills and muscle tone as we get older lessens our sense of balance. Senior citizens are therefore highly vulnerable to falls. The broken bones that can result from this take a long time to heal and lead to long periods of immobility.
Studies show that the most common reasons for physical inactivity are long distances to exercise facilities and inadequate equipment once there. Lappset is responding to the challenge posed by the ageing population by offering environments that combine playgrounds and exercise facilities and invite people of all ages to join in the fun. Rocking chairs are history!
